A spectacled bear looking at you with a faint smile, the only bear of South America, named for the pale rings round its eyes. I painted the rings and muzzle in orange and peach and the black coat in turquoise, cobalt and violet, in long strokes that run off the bottom of the sheet in drips. It is a portrait format. This is the bear that inspired Paddington, who came from darkest Peru. The bears of the world chart has all eight species.
The original watercolor painting is listed separately: see the original spectacled bear painting.
Why it is a limited edition
Each print is made in an edition of 150, and I sign and number every copy in pencil under the image. The edition is small so that every copy can be made properly: the file is scanned from the painting itself, printed on museum-quality cotton paper with archival pigment inks, compared with the original in daylight and corrected until the colours match, and only then signed. When the last copy is sold, the edition closes for good.
