An osprey carries its wings high on the downstroke, and I painted this one at exactly that moment: wings raised over the back, white head and chest forward, yellow eye fixed on the water below. The feathers are dark indigo and burnt umber laid on in long strokes, with blue splatter around them for spray. Ospreys are back on rivers and coasts across Europe and North America, and this print is often ordered by people who watch a nest near home. One collector hung it in a restaurant.
Each print is made in an edition of 150, and I sign and number every copy in pencil under the image. The edition is small so that every copy can be made properly: the file is scanned from the painting itself, printed on museum-quality cotton paper with archival pigment inks, compared with the original in daylight and corrected until the colours match, and only then signed. When the last copy is sold, the edition closes for good.
