The African wild dog, also called the painted dog, has the biggest ears of any canid and a coat that looks splashed on, so it was made for watercolour. I painted the face straight on, the two round ears in indigo and umber, the muzzle in dark blue with a touch of light on the nose, and the cream patches as bare paper with ochre washes bleeding into them. The eyes are amber and watchful. It is a portrait format and one of my most reviewed wild animal prints.
Each print is made in an edition of 150, and I sign and number every copy in pencil under the image. The edition is small so that every copy can be made properly: the file is scanned from the painting itself, printed on museum-quality cotton paper with archival pigment inks, compared with the original in daylight and corrected until the colours match, and only then signed. When the last copy is sold, the edition closes for good.
