An Atlas beetle seen from above, one of the largest beetles in the world, with the three long curved horns of the male and wing cases of metallic green. The green is painted in layers with the light left on it, the head and horns in indigo and violet, and the spiny legs in blue-black. Yellow, orange and pink washes behind. It is a portrait format, for anyone who collects insects or simply likes strong shapes.
The original watercolor painting is listed separately: see the original atlas beetle painting.
Why it is a limited edition
Each print is made in an edition of 150, and I sign and number every copy in pencil under the image. The edition is small so that every copy can be made properly: the file is scanned from the painting itself, printed on museum-quality cotton paper with archival pigment inks, compared with the original in daylight and corrected until the colours match, and only then signed. When the last copy is sold, the edition closes for good.
