A tree sparrow in flight, seen from above with both wings fully spread, the chestnut cap, the black cheek spot on white, and the brown wings streaked in black with each feather edged in white. The outer feathers fade into lilac. Behind the bird is a wash of turquoise with orange, lime and blue dots. It is a portrait format. It is the smallest, most ordinary bird I have painted, and the one I see from the studio window every day.
The original watercolor painting is listed separately: see the original sparrow painting.
Why it is a limited edition
Each print is made in an edition of 150, and I sign and number every copy in pencil under the image. The edition is small so that every copy can be made properly: the file is scanned from the painting itself, printed on museum-quality cotton paper with archival pigment inks, compared with the original in daylight and corrected until the colours match, and only then signed. When the last copy is sold, the edition closes for good.
