A shoebill standing in profile among leaves, the huge grey bird from the swamps of East Africa with a bill like a wooden clog and a stare that does not move. I painted the bird in slate, blue-grey and lilac with the feathers drawn in a fine line, the bill in peach and brown, and the leaves around it in orange, teal and violet with splashes. It is a portrait format and a favourite with people who have seen one at a zoo and never forgotten it.
Why it is a limited edition
Each print is made in an edition of 150, and I sign and number every copy in pencil under the image. The edition is small so that every copy can be made properly: the file is scanned from the painting itself, printed on museum-quality cotton paper with archival pigment inks, compared with the original in daylight and corrected until the colours match, and only then signed. When the last copy is sold, the edition closes for good.
