A northern hawk-owl facing you, the white face edged in black, the yellow eyes and bill, and the finely barred breast. The back and wing are painted in cobalt and indigo, and a bright yellow wash glows behind the head. It is a portrait format; the boy in the photo is holding the 16 x 20 in size. It is the owl of the far northern forest that hunts by day. The great grey owl is its neighbour there.
Why it is a limited edition
Each print is made in an edition of 150, and I sign and number every copy in pencil under the image. The edition is small so that every copy can be made properly: the file is scanned from the painting itself, printed on museum-quality cotton paper with archival pigment inks, compared with the original in daylight and corrected until the colours match, and only then signed. When the last copy is sold, the edition closes for good.
