Two yellow eyes, and everything else in the painting is there to frame them. The great horned owl is built from small overlapping dabs of purple, teal, ochre and brown, like the feathers themselves, with the ear tufts in quick dry strokes and the facial disc left pale. The eyes are the only pure, flat colour on the sheet. It is a portrait format and one of my most reviewed owl paintings, often bought for a child’s room or a study. The boy in the photo is holding the 16 x 20 in size.
Each print is made in an edition of 150, and I sign and number every copy in pencil under the image. The edition is small so that every copy can be made properly: the file is scanned from the painting itself, printed on museum-quality cotton paper with archival pigment inks, compared with the original in daylight and corrected until the colours match, and only then signed. When the last copy is sold, the edition closes for good.
