A male chaffinch seen from behind and looking right, the blue-grey cap, the orange cheeks and breast, and the black wing with its two white bars. Behind it are orange, pink and violet washes that run down in lilac and turquoise drips. It is a portrait format. The chaffinch is one of the commonest birds in European gardens and one of the prettiest. It belongs with the blue tits and the bullfinch.
The original watercolor painting is listed separately: see the original chaffinch painting.
Why it is a limited edition
Each print is made in an edition of 150, and I sign and number every copy in pencil under the image. The edition is small so that every copy can be made properly: the file is scanned from the painting itself, printed on museum-quality cotton paper with archival pigment inks, compared with the original in daylight and corrected until the colours match, and only then signed. When the last copy is sold, the edition closes for good.
