A gray whale swimming up and to the left, the mottled slate skin painted with pale patches and the gold barnacles on the head that every adult carries. Behind it are turquoise, yellow and violet washes that fan out like spray and run down in drips. It is a landscape format. Gray whales make the longest migration of any mammal, from Baja to the Arctic, and this print goes mostly to the Pacific coast. The humpback whale is the one it is most often bought with.
Why it is a limited edition
Each print is made in an edition of 150, and I sign and number every copy in pencil under the image. The edition is small so that every copy can be made properly: the file is scanned from the painting itself, printed on museum-quality cotton paper with archival pigment inks, compared with the original in daylight and corrected until the colours match, and only then signed. When the last copy is sold, the edition closes for good.
